My Story

Shujaa began his musical journey singing in a tiny one room church deep in the low country of Berkeley County South Carolina. Even though it was small in size, it was a powerhouse of prayer and melody with his Grand Dad filling the air with his percussive bluesy gospel guitar and his Grandmother Martha leading the way on vocals through endless days of foot-stomping glory. This is where he first experienced the power of music to help us transcend the physical.

“WHAT IS WONDERFUL ABOUT MUSIC IS THAT IT HELPS MAN TO CONCENTRATE OR MEDITATE INDEPENDENTLY OF THOUGHT; AND THEREFORE MUSIC SEEMS TO BE THE BRIDGE OVER THE GULF BETWEEN FORM AND THE FORMLESS. IF THERE IS ANYTHING INTELLIGENT, EFFECTIVE, AND AT THE SAME TIME FORMLESS , IT IS MUSIC.”

As a child he was exposed to a vast array of instruments due to the blessing of his mom Wilhelmina,  who wanted him to experience as much of the arts as possible. Starting off on violin and piano, vocal choirs in grade school and in college then jumping over to Bass guitar in the early 70’s.

He cut his teeth playing along with his brother’s 45’s on the sweet , funky soul of artists like , Issac Hayes, James Brown, The Jackson Five, Curtis Mayfield, the Isley Bros….and so many more …..then there was the folk and  rock side of things with Jimi Hendrix, Joni Mitchell, Chicago, Led Zeppelin and War, creating sounds never heard before. All of these influences flowed around  inside him for years as he toured the USA in a slew of bands, slowly boiling and brewing inside Shujaa, sculpting him into  the  versatile, visionary,  multi-instrumentalist that he is today.

Over his 40 years of traveling and performing he has shared the stage with a long list of diverse acts:

The Wailers, Living Color, Tuck and Patty, Bootsy Collins, Blues Traveller, Public Enemy,  Arrow, Shinehead, Snoop Dog and the Doobie  Brothers to name a few.

He now is concentrating  on creating music with a new focus:

Balancing and energizing Mind/Body/Spirit so he can facilitate healing and transcendence for all.
